Choosing Effective Website Images

Choosing Effective Website Images

Both before and after launch, our clients often want to change the images that are on their website. Before you submit the support ticket with your request, make sure that the images are appropriate for your website.

Ask yourself these questions:

1. Could the image be cropped if needed?

Depending on how and where you use them, images you send to add to your website may need cropping. Before you submit your image, take a look at where on the site you want it to go. If you think the image may need cropping, make sure that it can be done without losing its main components.

2. Is the image easy to understand?

This image is intended for your professional business website. Therefore, it should be as high-quality, clear, and unblurred as possible. If you take pictures with your smartphone or a camera, make sure to take more than one. That way, you have a few versions to choose from later. If capturing quality photos is difficult for you, consider hiring a pro to help.

3. Is it the right size?

It’s easy to make a large picture smaller and still have it look great. It’s not possible to take a small picture and make it larger without reducing its quality. That’s why it’s extremely important to send a photo of the appropriate size. If you want your image front and center, full-width across the page, you wouldn’t want to send a thumbnail-sized picture of 25 px by 25 px.

4. Does it match the content?

Images are meant to enhance the content on the page that they are placed on. If your web page is about waffles, don’t send a photo of donuts. Well thought out images can help reassure customers they’ve come to the right page, and support written content.

The answers to these questions may seem like no-brainers. However, it’s easy to forget to consider them if you’re in a rush to send images off to your web design agency, or there is a lot to sift through. Taking a few extra minutes now could save you hours of time later. Not to mention, get you to the launch phase faster if your site is in development.
