Email Marketing 101

Email Marketing 101

Think about how many emails you receive every day. Out of those, how many come from businesses you frequent regarding their products, services, and specials? The average number of emails received per day is around 121. As you can see, your inbox is a busy place to be.

If you practice email marketing, you need to rise above the 120 other emails in your recipient’s inbox to get their attention and possibly their purchases. A well-designed email drives your message forward, guiding the contact who received it to your desired goal.

Here are five tips for designing an eye-catching email:

1. Set Goals

Like any marketing activity you do, your email must be sent with a goal in mind. Ask yourself questions to better determine what this goal is.

Some of these questions include:

  • Do you want to increase sales?
  • Is this intended as a regular newsletter or other updates about your business?
  • Are you promoting a specific product, service, or special?
  • Are you celebrating a special occasion like a holiday or anniversary?

Regardless of the goal, you need to make sure that you have one to design your email accordingly.

2. Consider Your Content

Your email’s content provides you with an opportunity to show the recipient the value you provide them. Explain the action they should take. For example, using a coupon code to save a certain amount on a purchase or sharing details about an event at your location.

Like with any other marketing content you create, keep in mind the fundamentals of writing compelling text. Write for scannability, as most people will be simply skimming your email. More importantly, use the right tone and personalize your messaging when appropriate to build a connection with the recipient.

3. Use Space Wisely

You only have so much space to use in an email template. Make sure to arrange your content and images in a way that supports your goals for that particular email. Consider what you want readers to see first at the top of your email, like a logo or call to action.

Then, throughout the rest of the email, consider how bolding, headers, and whitespace create visual cues that communicate information quickly and efficiently. Headlines, bolding, structure, and reduced copy make your message easier to read and understand for the average recipient. Although the message can vary, this structure can be used for any kind of email.

4. Be Responsive

By responsive, we don’t mean responding to every email that comes across your inbox. Although, when it comes to customer service emails, those contacting you would appreciate that. What we mean is to consider the email client and device recipients view your email on. The way your email looks can change based on the email client or device a recipient uses.

To provide a consistent experience for all recipients, use a mobile-friendly template for your emails. With this template, your email width changes consistently based on the size of the screen. That means that regardless of whether a recipient is using a smartphone, tablet, or desktop, they’ll still be able to see your email as it was intended to be.

5. Create Your Call-to-Action

The most important part of your email is the call to action. The goal you set for your email ties directly with your call-to-action as it puts that goal into actionable terms. It can be in the form of a button or text that stands out from the rest of the email content. That said, your CTA should be larger, use action verbs, and have enough white space around it. Recipients should be able to glance at it and know what to do.
