The 3 Types of SEO

The 3 Types of SEO

If you’ve owned your own website for any amount of time, you know what SEO or Search Engine Optimization is. What you may not know is that there are three main types of SEO. These don’t compete with each other but rather come together to form your overall SEO strategy.

What are the 3 Types of SEO?

1. On-Page SEO

Probably the most well-known of the three, on-page SEO involves optimizing your website’s various front-end and back-end elements to help it rank in search engines and attract traffic. These changes are mostly seen by users of your website as they involve creative elements like the content. It also helps search engine bots to better index your website’s content.

While writing SEO-friendly content is important, what that content includes and how it’s organized matters more. For example, although you don’t want to overuse them, your keywords should be included in your content. You should also use heading tags to organize the content better to make it easier for both users and search engine bots to read.

2. Off-Page SEO

You may be thinking that what happens on other websites doesn’t really concern yours. The truth is, it can and will when it comes to off-page SEO. Search engines rank websites based on how authoritative they are. This authority comes from backlinks to your website from others who refer to it on their own websites or blogs.

What are backlinks?

Let’s say that you’re an interior designer who writes blogs highlighting different ways to decorate your home. Then, a carpenter who builds cabinets links back to your blog on their website to share advice on decorating kitchens with their clients. The link from the carpenter’s website to your blog is a backlink.

This is why it’s important to participate in conversations online in your industry. Create content that others find interesting and informative so they will link back to it on their own websites or blogs. Blog posts are especially linkable as they allow you to share your expertise in a way that is accessible to your readers.

3. Technical SEO

While you can mostly do the other two types of SEO yourself, technical SEO may require the expertise of a web developer. Although users will not see all of the changes made to your website for technical SEO, search engines will. Then, they will take these into account when ranking your site.

To help search engine bots crawl your site better and improve technical SEO, create an XML sitemap. This sitemap isn’t a map in the traditional sense but a file on your server that lists relevant URLs your website carries. It contains information about each page on your website, like when it was last modified, what priority it has on your site, and how frequently it is updated.

As for the aspects of your technical SEO that users see, you should focus on your site’s security and mobile friendliness. With the rise of mobile device use, responsive design that adjusts to different screen sizes is becoming the norm, which is especially helpful for technical SEO. However, security is an area in which many websites could still use improvement.

For example, if you sell products online, you want customers to feel secure providing payment information. One way to do this is by installing an SSL certificate. This certificate creates an encrypted link between a server and a browser. To determine if a website has an SSL, look at its URL. If it starts with https:// rather than http://, then it has an SSL installed.
