Website Content 101

As a website owner, you know that your website has a few basic elements to it. These include images, branding, and content. Do you know exactly what you need to write for your website’s written content? This question can be a challenging one to answer.
You may feel comfortable talking about who you are and what you do. Writing about it may be a different story. You want to make sure your website content reflects your brand’s personality while providing visitors with all the information they need.
Here are 7 tips on writing website content:
1. Focus on Your Visitors
Update the content of your pages to focus more on answering questions your potential visitors may have. After all, they are the reason that your business and your website exist. Try to look at your website from their point of view. For example, if you’re a real estate agent, imagine that you’re a potential homebuyer. Consider what you’d be looking for in a website like yours.
2. Ask Yourself Questions
Before you write any content for your website, try making a list of common questions your customers ask. Think about questions that you answer on a daily basis and write them down. For example, if you’re a landscaper, your clients may ask about what services you provide to prepare their gardens for winter.
These questions can be as simple as how someone can make an appointment with you. They can also be more complex and ask for specific information regarding a service you provide. Typically, a page of website content addresses 10-20 common questions.
Sample questions include:
- What services do you offer?
- How much do these services cost?
- Why should I have this service done?
- How often should I have this service performed?
- Do you offer discounts or packages for services?
- Where are you located?
- Can you come to my location?
- Why should I work with you?
- What advantages do you offer over your competitors?
- How can I contact you?
3. Imagine the Headlines
Once you have your list of questions, turn each question into a statement that can be used as a headline. These headlines can serve as topics to be covered by that page of your website’s content. You can also use services and products you offer as potential headlines. For example, a services page for a hair salon could include headlines like haircuts, coloring, and styling.
4. Start Writing
After you’ve come up with your headlines, start by writing a paragraph or two that discusses the topic of each headline. This should be done as editorial text rather than in a question and answer format. By editorial text, we mean that your content should be written much like a newspaper or magazine article. Make sure to use complete sentences and proper grammar.

5. Write What You Need
Remember, you can never write too much text. However, you should shoot for a minimum of 400 words for search engine optimization (SEO) purposes. For the most part, a higher word count helps Google and other search engines better understand what your content is about. Generally speaking, search engines rank longer articles higher in results.
6. Help Them Contact You
To ensure that you gain the desired leads and conversions, add a way for visitors to your website to contact you in your website content. This can be a link to your contact page, or you can list your phone number so visitors can call you directly. Regardless of which option you choose, visitors should be able to get in touch with you.

7. Put Yourself on The Map
You also want to make sure you include your service area for all appropriate pages. For example, if you’re a contractor who provides services within a certain city.
This can also be achieved by including a map of your service area on the desired website page. Make sure to highlight where you serve specifically. For example, the city of Bangor or the state of Maine.
