Where to Find Content Ideas

Perhaps you’ve been keeping a blog for some time. When you first began blogging, you were excited at the idea of sharing your thoughts and expertise online.
Now, maybe a year or so later, you see contributing to your blog as another thing on your to-do list. It doesn’t have to be this way. Ideas for new blog content can come from the places you least expect it to.
Here are six places to find content ideas:
1. Content You Consume
Along with creating content, you most likely consume it yourself. You watch videos, read books, and use social media. You may not realize it, but these are potential sources of content ideas. Providing your opinions on this content can make for an interesting blog post.
Let’s say that you’re a dog trainer. You watched a video online about how to travel with pets. You could create a blog post that explains to your readers how to prepare their pets to travel while they’re still at home.
2. Those Who Consume Your Content
If you’ve created a buyer persona for other aspects of your marketing, consider using that information to craft content that would appeal to that person. Remember that a buyer persona is a fictional representation of your ideal customer or reader.
If you do not have a buyer persona, find ways to get readers’ feedback. If you have a comments section on your blog, review comments readers leave and attempt to respond to them in future posts. Your readers will feel more connected to your content and like you’ve given them a voice.
3. Your Competitors
Consider your competition when creating content. Visit competitors’ blogs and websites to see what types of content they’re producing and how well it performs. Then, try to repurpose that content using your own perspective on the topic at hand.
4. Others You Work With
If you’re fortunate enough to work with a team of other writers, it may be a good idea to tap into their knowledge base as well. Set a time to meet and discuss ideas for upcoming content.
Make it fun and interesting by using icebreaker questions and word association games. You’d be surprised by what your teammates may come up with.
5. Your Own Mind
This may be an obvious suggestion, but your content ideas can come from your own thoughts. One way to capture these thoughts is through brainstorming. Take a few minutes to write down every thought that comes to mind about a certain topic. Then, you can narrow this list down to one subtopic of particular interest to write about.
For example, say you’re writing about visiting your hometown. Some possible topics that may come to mind could include things to do, places to stay, and restaurants in that town. You may come up with a blog post that lists the best things to do in your hometown over a weekend visit.
6. Content You’ve Created
Just because you’ve already published a piece of content does not necessarily mean you’re done with it forever. You can always repurpose the content to add new ideas, information, or formats. This is something that is especially useful if you create content across multiple platforms, like if you have multiple social media accounts.
Going back to the travel blog example, you could rewrite a blog post about the best restaurants in your hometown to include a new pizza parlor that recently opened. You could also use that blog post to create social media posts featuring photos of the best dishes served at those restaurants. It’s up to you to figure out how you can repurpose this content for future use.
